Dublin is truly a viking city. The name itīs self Dublin cames from the word "Dubh Linn" which in english means "Black pool". Baldoyle an area of Dublin is also part of viking Ireland. The historical connections of Baldoyle with the vikings are well documented. The name "Baldoyle" or "Bail Dubh Ghaill" in english means "The town of the dark foreigners".

The vikings extablished settlements built on or near river  estuaries. This was because they could sail up the rivers to the surrounding areas, and towns on estuaries could be more easily defended.

The vikings laid the foundations for a thriving city. A city with thick walls and many towers and gates. Some can even still be seen today. The vikings built two great cathedrals in Dublin. One was St Patricks and the other was Christchurch, and also Dublin castel dates from the vikings.

These buildings play their part in the life of the city still today...
